On the evening of March 31st, the folk custom event of a Long Table Banquet was held along the waterside corridor of Liwan Lake.
The Long Table Banquet symbolizes longevity. This year's banquet features a 100-meter feast set by the lake, where traditional Sai Kwan features harmoniously blend with the scenic beauty of Liwan Lake. Along the 100‑meter waterside corridor, residents and guests gathered in a festive spirit.
The banquet officially commenced after a series of traditional rituals, including unveiling the pot lids, opening the wine jars, toasting, and serving longevity buns. Later, dancers dressed in Hanfu, with orchid grass in hand, presented flowers to the guests, recalling a ritual scenario described in the "Rites of Zhou". This ritual, called "fuxi" in Chinese, is a traditional Chinese folk custom held by water on the Shangsi Festival in spring, symbolizing purification and the removal of misfortune.
A hundred varieties of Sai Kwan snacks were arrayed along the long table. The Water-chestnut Cake glistened like amber; the Sampan Congee exuded a savory aroma; the Rice Flour Water Caltrop boasted a satisfyingly chewy texture; the Wedding Rice Noodles with Dried Radish absorbed the rich essence of bone broth; and the Baked-Pork-Cake concealed a sweet fragrance of time within their crisp texture.
"Eating in Guangzhou, and eating good in Sai Kwan." During the banquet, a renowned Cantonese dim sum master shared the fascinating backstories of these traditional snacks. Notably, a nearly lost Sai Kwan specialty, Deep‑fried Shrimp with Taro Shreds, made a comeback, with dim sum chefs crafting it on-site, once again showcasing the culinary essence of traditional Sai Kwan cuisine.
